Di Bartolo Scores as Women’s Soccer Tops Old Westbury

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — An 80th-minute goal from Christina Di Bartolo (Middle Village, N.Y./Forest Hills) was the difference for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (6-7-1, 3-5-0 Skyline) as they edged the SUNY College at Old Westbury (4-10-0, 2-6 Skyline), 1-0, on Wednesday night in Farmingdale.

How it Happened

Di Bartolo and Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) combined for eight shots in the first half, twice as many as the Panthers in the period. The pair each had two of their shots saved as neither side was able to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.

The Bears continued attacking in the second half, ultimately resulting in Di Bartolo's goal in the 80th minute. Fellow senior Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) managed to fire a pair of shots, with the latter hitting the post. The carom found Di Bartolo, who got the ball past the Old Westbury keeper. It proved to be the game-winning goal for the Bears as the Panthers were unable to respond in the waning minutes.

For the Bears

  • Di Bartolo's goal was her 14th of the season, good for second in the conference.

  • Lavelle logged her team-leading eighth assist of the campaign.

  • Of their Bears' 15 shots, Di Bartolo had a game-leading seven with Castaneda behind her with five. Lavelle and Ashley Vozella (Reding, Pa./Berks Catholic) combined for the remaining three shots.

  • Alexis Breen (Union, N.J./Keyport) registered seven saves and a clean sheet.
