Women's Swimming Meet Day: Lady Bears at HVIAC Invitational

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – St. Joseph's (2-6) takes part in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Women's Swimming Invitational along with The College of New Rochelle (2-6) and Sarah Lawrence College (7-1) at the CNR Wellness Center on Sunday, January 26th at 10:00 a.m. The Lady Bears are looking to finish first in the invitational after finishing in second place for the past three seasons.

LADY BEARS LAST TIME OUT

After a month-long break, the Lady Bears women's swimming team came up short in their 2013-14 home finale at Brooklyn Technical H.S. dropping a 52-41 decision to Sarah Lawrence College in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet on Friday evening.

Sophomore Morgan Summers (Bellerose, N.Y./St. Mary's) came away with the sole victory for St. Joseph's with a six second triumph in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in a 1:09.34.

Victoria Benalcazar (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) captured second place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 31.12 while sophomore Jillian O'Hara (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) also took second in the other sprint freestyle, this in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.90). Junior Jaclyn Montana (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bay Ridge Prep) also finished in second place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:28.38) for the Lady Bears.

GRYPHONS LAST TIME OUT

Sarah Lawrence won their tenth straight league dual in beating St. Joseph's in a 52-41 decision on January 17th. The Gryphons posted the fastest time in 10 events on the day.

Gabby Risica took three victories for the Gryphons in the meet by winning as part of the 200-yard medley relay, the 50-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard freestyle.

The team of Sam Amberchan, Jacqueline Quirk, Collette Harley, and Risica took an 11-second victory in the 200-yard medley relay (2:09.38). Alexis Bates and Cici Nicholson took first (12:38.74) and second (15:07.45) place, respectively in the 1000-yard freestyle.

BLUE ANGELS LAST TIME OUT

Last time out, The College of New Rochelle fell to St. Joseph's (Long Island) 113-68, on January 20th in Patchogue. 

The Blue Angels were victorious in just two events against the Golden Eagles. Tina Thomas won the 50-yard freestyle with a 30.64 time, while Ilsy Rodriguez took the 100-yard breaststroke contest (1:27.85).

SERIES HISTORY/LAST MEETING

Sarah Lawrence holds a 7-0 edge in the all-time series dating back to 2008. The two schools last met on January 17th, where the Lady Bears fell to the Gryphons, 52-41.

St. Joseph's lost to HVIAC rival College of New Rochelle, 55-43 on December 3. It was the first time the Blue Angels had defeated the Lady Bears since December 2008, a stretch of six consecutive meets over five seasons.
