Women's Swimming Opens Season at SLC Sprint Carnival

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team got their 2014-15 started with a fifth place finish at the Sarah Lawrence College Sprint Carnival at the Campbell Athletic Center Pool.

The relay team of Julia Dineen (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour), Erin Collins (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall), Tina Wong (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications Art and Technology) and Victoria Benalcazar (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) turned in the highest place finish for the Lady Bears in the opening 200-yard medley relay finishing in fourth with a time of 2:30.10.

Dineen would later produce the highest individual finish, capturing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke, edged out of fourth by one-hundredth of a second. In her other two individual events, the sophomore captured seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke (48.93) and seventh in the 100-yard individual medley (1:34.95)—two of 10 seventh place finishes collected by the team in the six-team meet.

The opening relay squad also grabbed seventh-place finishes, Wong in the 100-yard butterfly (1:22.63), Collins in the 100-yard backstroke (1:27.24) and Benalcazar in the 50-yard butterfly (38.95).

In her their first collegiate meets, freshmen Brianna Minogue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Suzanne Nordbo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) collected seventh place finishes—Minogue in the 100-yard freestyle (1:08.95) and 200-yard freestyle (2:36.96) and Nordbo in the 50-yard backstroke (49.49).

Rounding out the seventh place finishes for the team were sophomore Jillian O'Hara (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) in 200-yard individual medley (2:59.17) and senior Shannon Rom (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) in the 50-yard free (35.21), setting a new personal best.

Host Sarah Lawrence took the team competition followed by St. Joseph's College (Long Island), Brooklyn College and Fashion Institute tied for third, the Lady Bears and College of New Rochelle in sixth.

St. Joseph's returns to the pool on Friday, November 7th in their home opener at Brooklyn Technical High School, hosting future Skyline foes Old Westbury at 7 p.m.
