Women’s Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Contest to Farmingdale State
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team suffered a straight-set heartbreaker to Farmingdale State College on Monday night from The Hill Center (19-25, 22-25, 21-25).
How it Happened
The Bears opened the contest with a 9-5 advantage, thanks to service aces from Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Mireia Alba (Barcelona, Spain). A 7-1 run following a Rams timeout, swung the lead in their favor, 12-10. Alba would notch a pair of kills, as would Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills), to close the deficit to one, 20-19. However, the visitors took the remaining five points to win the set, 25-19.
A seesaw second set saw six ties and five lead changes. Alba continued to fuel the navy and gray attack, totaling five kills, four digs, and a pair of aces in the period. Melo also had four digs while Urgo and Rachel Guerra (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) brought up three but Farmingdale State narrowly escaped the stanza, 25-22.
Despite the Rams' maintaining the lead throughout the entire third set, the Bears continued to breathe down their necks; trailing by no more than six. Ultimately, FSC took the set by four, 25-21, and the 3-0 match win.
