The Bear Facts

St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) earned their first win of the season last Saturday against sibling school SJC Long Island, splitting the twin bill. The Bears were led by Louis Lombardi as his bases-clearing double drove in three runs propelling the navy and gray to a 4-3 victory. Despite a loss in game two, Lombardi capped off his four-RBI day with a second-inning solo home run.

Joining Lombardi as the only Bears with hits in both ends of the doubleheader are William DeLuca, who went 3-for-6, and Chris Leary, registering a base knock in each game.

Matt McHugh was credited with the win as the sophomore tossed three innings of relief, allowing just a single run and hit. Starter Andrew Monda went four innings, giving up a pair of runs and striking out two.

DeLuca and Anthony Hernandez share the team lead in hits with 12. DeLuca is also first on the team with a .353 batting average while he’s second in slugging (.471) and on-base percentage (.436) behind Lombardi (.600) and Joe Grignon (.500), respectively.

Lombardi’s 4-RBI day last Saturday brought him to eight on the year with Lucas Collet right behind him with six.

Jake McDonald, who did not feature in the two-game set against SJCLI, maintains the lead in ERA (4.50). McHugh, Lombardi, and Mike Santoriello combine for 21 of the Bears’ 50 strikeouts. Santoriello’s 15.1 innings pitched are good for fourth in the Skyline while McHugh cracks into the top ten, tossing 12 innings.

The Rams Report

The Farmingdale State College baseball program enters this weekend’s series against St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) undefeated in conference play with a 6-0 record (6-2 overall) as they defend their 2019 Skyline Baseball title.

In 10 innings pitched over a pair of starts Stephen Clancy has maintained an ERA of 0.00, leading the Skyline and Division III. His league-leading 0.50 WHIP places him in seventh in the nation. Clancy won both of his starts of the season (3/20 vs. Manhattanville; 3/27 vs. Purchase) to rank second in the conference in wins while his 10 strikeouts placed him in fifth.

Also ranking in the Skyline Top 10 in ERA are Thomas Messina (1.08, 5th) and Joe Marino (2.30, 9th). Marino picked up a pair of saves this season, most recently against Purchase on March 29, to place in second in that department. The senior leftie also comes in fifth in innings pitched with 15.2 in four appearances.

Offensively, sophomore Bobby Pollock leads the Rams in most offensive categories; including batting average (.444), slugging (.852), hits (12), extra-base hits (6), and RBI (9). Only Ryan DePalma has a better on-base percentage (.529), cracking into the Skyline Top 10 in the category while Jordan Lambert joins Pollock in the lead with nine RBI.

Pollock went 6-for-16 (.375) with three RBI and as many runs scored in the Purchase series. In their 8-7 win against the Panthers on March 27, he was a single shy of hitting for a cycle; doubling in the 3rd inning, launching his second homer of the season in the fifth, and tripling his next time at the plate in the sixth.
