The Bear Facts

St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) welcomes Mount Saint Vincent to The Hill Center this afternoon in the second game of a three-game homestand. The Bears will don pink uniforms in their annual Play4Kay game while fundraising for the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation.

On Wednesday, Kelly O’Donnell dropped a team-leading 18 points, going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, and was one of five Bears to score in double figures against sibling rivals SJC Long Island. Jamie Provino shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, finishing with 16 points. Shooting 50 percent from the field and 75% from distance, Briana Gomez finished with a career-high 13 points while Emma Kiley and Grace Kennedy each totaled 11 points.

Kiley finished with a game-high 15 rebounds while O’Donnell had 10 caroms, coming within one rebound of matching Samantha Retas’ ‘15 program record of 958 career boards. O’Donnell also has amassed 1,937 career points.

The reigning Skyline Player of the Week O’Donnell (20.1) remains second in the league in points per game and finds herself sixth with 10.1 rebounds per outing. Kiley and Alexis Breen are averaging 15.1 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Kiley’s 8.9 rebounds per night is good for 10th in the Skyline.

In SJC’s visit to CMSV last month, O’Donnell’s double-double (20 pts, 10 reb) and Kiley’s 15 points saw the navy and gray climb out of an 18-point hole, trimming their deficit to seven before falling to the Dolphins. 

Dolphin Tales

At 12-4 in league play, 14-4 overall, Mount Saint Vincent visits Brooklyn sitting in third in the Skyline standings and having already clinched a playoff berth. Following a defeat to Merchant Marine at the end of January, the Dolphins enter as winners of three straight and nine of their last 10 games.

In their last outing against Old Westbury, Amber Been scored 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting. She also collected 11 boards and dished out six assists. Kira Villegas came within a bucket of matching her season-high, finishing with 19 points, six rebounds, and three dimes. Victoria Hanley (13) and Kayla Hanley (10), who joined the program in January, also finished in double-figures against the Panthers. 

The week prior, V. Hanley averaged 15.5 points and 16.5 rebounds in home wins against Sarah Lawrence and SJC Long Island to earn recognition on the Skyline Weekly Honor Roll. The senior forward’s 14.9 points per game this season is good for second on the team, trailing Been whose 16.5 points per game ranks 8th in the conference. K. Hanley’s 11.3 points and Villegas’ 10.6 points see the pair rank third and fourth on the Dolphins.

As a team, the Dolphins rank 3rd in the league with 11.8 steals a night, with Been (3.8, 1st), Villegas (2.7, 4th), and V. Hanley (2.3, 9th) all ranked among the league’s top 10 swindlers. Been also places sixth in the nation.

When Mount Saint Vincent hosted the Bears at the Peter Jay Sharp Center in January, K. Hanley’s 19-point total paced the Dolphins en route to a 68-59 win. Been logged 14 points and 10 boards while Dez Brown and Melanieann Broderick each finished with 11 points.
