Baseball Takes a Pair Off Gallaudet to Extend Winning Streak to Four

WASHINGTON, DC – St. Joseph's College baseball remained undefeated on their spring break road trip defeating Gallaudet University 9-4 and 6-1 on Sunday afternoon.  The games were pushed up from Monday due to the forecast of rain.  Chris Davidson (San Carlos, CA/Canada College) and Jon Cubero (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) picked up their first wins of the season.

In game one, Gallaudet took a 2-0 lead scoring in the first and third inning.  St. Joseph's came alive in the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four.  Back-to-back Gallaudet errors that extended the inning.

The Bears extended their lead in the fifth with Davidson getting the game-winning RBI with a two-run single that scored Steven Tanamal (Brooklyn, NY/New Urtecht HS) and Jon Mendez(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) who both singled to start the inning.  St. Joseph's tacked on three insurance runs in the final two innings.

Mykelle Cortez (Brooklyn, NY/Cobble Hill HS) started the game on the mound pitching 3.2 one-hit innings, striking out four and giving up two runs.  Despite leaving with a 4-2 lead, he was one out shy of the mandatory four innings for a starting pitcher to receive the win and Cubero was credited the win in relief.  Cubero pitched 2.2 innings striking out three and allowing only two hits and two runs.

Davidson was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.  Tanamal had two hits with one RBI, scoring twice.  John Porcelli (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) had two hits and two RBIs.  Alvaro Quinones (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) added two hits and scored once.  Joseph Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) and Keith Juricich(San Mateo, CA/Canada College) had the only extra-base hits, each hitting a double.  Mendez and Juricich also scored twice.

In the nightcap, Gallaudet took a 1-0 lead in the third, but it didn't last long as the Bears tied the game in the next half inning.  St. Joseph's went on to take the lead in the fifth inning on a Mendez single that scored Jacob Ramos (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck) for the game-winning run.

Davidson pitched another solid game scattering nine hits preventing the Bisons from putting together any significant rally.  The Bears added four insurance runs in the final two innings to give him a large cushion for the complete game win.  Davidson struck out seven and walked two.

Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) was the only Bear to have multiple hits going 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Boccia had a triple, an RBI and a run.  A.J. Passione(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) hit his fourth double of the season and drove in a run.  Mendez and Quinones each had a hit with a run and an RBI.  Juricich and Noriega each had a hit and scored.

St. Joseph's (7-12) closes out the road trip in Takoma Park, MD in a USCAA matchup against defending champion Columbia Union who is ranked #2 in last week's coaches poll.
