Bears Finish Spring Break Road Stand With 4-1 Record

TAKOMA PARK, MD – The St. Joseph's College baseball team (7-13) concluded their southern road stand with a 9-2 loss to defending USCAA National Champion Columbia Union College (14-12) in a nine-inning game.  In the third coaches poll released earlier today, Columbia Union was ranked third and St. Joseph's jumped five places to twelfth. 

Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) went 2-for-5 to lead the Bears at the plate. Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Canada College) received the loss starting on the mound pitching 5.2 innings and giving up five earned runs.

The game remained close through the early stages with Columbia Union grabbing a one run lead in the second and fourth innings, both unearned as a result of St. Joseph's errors.

The Bears tied the game in the fourth on a Pioneer error that allowed Alvaro Quinones(Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) to reach with two outs extending the inning.  Langone got his second hit of the game to advance Quinones to second and Jason Iannozzi (Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC) singled up the middle to bring Quinones home.

Trailing again in the fifth, the A.J. Passione(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) led off the inning reaching on an error and made it to third on a sacrifice bunt and passed ball.  After Chris Davidson(San Carlos, CA/Canada College) walked to put runners at the corners, Davidson stole second allowing Passione to score on the play, tying the game for the second time.

Columbia Union broke open the game in the sixth with a two out rally that scored five runs off Juricich.

The Pioneers used six pitchers in the game that held the Bears to only five hits.
Davidson finished 1-for-3 with a walk extending his hitting streak to seven games.  Joe Boccia (Westwood, NJ/Westwood) went 1-for-4 to extended his hitting streak to six.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Thursday afternoon for the first of four games to be played at Keyspan Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, in Coney Island, Brooklyn.  The Bears host John Jay College (6-17) for a single game scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
