Erne Keeps Bears Off Balance in Loss

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – After scoring nine runs in the opening game of the Cal Ripken Experience, St. Joseph's has scored five in the following two games. The Bears offense went flat in game two of Saturday's day/night doubleheader, as they fell to SUNY Oswego, 10-2.

The story was Laker starter Dan Erne. Erne pitched eight innings allowing just two runs, while scattering seven hits and striking out eight.

Senior Kevin Hernandez (Corona, NY/Newtown) was ineffective in his first start of the season allowing nine runs (eight earned) in just three innings. Freshman Donny Pagano (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) came on in relief and gave the Bears a chance to comeback. Pagano allowed one run in five innings, finishing the game for St. Joseph's.

Hernandez was done in with a wild first inning. Hernandez allowed seven runs in the inning and all three batters that walked came around to score.

Junior Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) and freshman Mike Cundari (Staten Island, NY/St. Peters) had two hits apiece and scored the two runs for the Bears. Freshman Danny Zaretsky (Brooklyn, NY/Lincoln) went 1-for-4 and picked up his first RBI of the year. Mendez also picked up an RBI.

Pat Brown, Andrew Lazzaro, and Tom Curry led the offense for Oswego. They each had two RBI. Brown was one of three Lakers to record two hits.

St. Joseph's concludes its trip in South Carolina against Richard Stockton. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
