Luebcke Selected as Skyline Baseball Player of the Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Leading the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team to a pair of doubleheader sweeps of the College of Staten Island and Lehman College over the weekend, senior Brian Luebcke (Monsignor McClancy/Astoria, N.Y.) has been selected as the first Skyline Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the 2016 season, announced by the league office this evening.

Over a 4-0 stretch where the Bears saw their first action in the northeast, Luebcke compiled a .526 (10-for-19) batting average and .947 slugging percentage collecting eight RBI, nine runs, a home run, a triple and three doubles.

The senior extended his hitting streak to nine games, the only Bear to successfully hit in every game this season.

He highlighted his weekend with a 4-for-6 effort with two RBI, three runs and his first homer of the season in the 21-run outburst in game one at Lehman yesterday.

On the mound, the Luebcke earned his first win of the season with a seven-inning complete game victory over Staten Island where he struck out six, scattered four hits and surrendered just one earned run in the game two triumph on Saturday that clinched the Bears first sweep of the Dolphins.

In addition to tossing a complete game, his second of the season, the versatile senior started at shortstop, second base and right field over the four-game set. He currently leads the team with a .459 batting average, .730 slugging and a team-low 1.13 earned run average through 16 innings of work.

The Player of the Week honor is the first collected by a Bear, with St. Joseph's competing in their first year in the nine-team league.

Luebcke and the Bears (4-5) will look to build on their four-game win streak on Thursday, March 17 heading to Madison, N.J. to face Drew University, in a game originally scheduled for Wednesday. The single nine-inning non-conference game is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. Live stats will be available on SJCBears.com.
