Baseball Concludes 2018 with Sweep of Mount Saint Vincent

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — All nine starters recorded a hit in game one and three Bears picked up multi-hit games in the second contest as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team swept the College of Mount Saint Vincent in their Skyline and season finale on Sunday afternoon. SJC finished their first year under coach Blumenauer at 7-28 overall and 5-13 in conference play, good for eighth place in the Skyline.

How It Happened (Game 1)

• Bears' starter Daniel Egan notched a one-out strikeout with runners on second and third, walked a batter, then fanned the next Dolphin hitter to get out of a jam in the first as both sides failed to score in the first three innings. However, a two-run double from William DeLuca in the top of the fourth pushed SJC ahead, 2-0.
• St. Joseph's tallied two more scores in the fifth as an Adam Schwartz single was followed by a two-run homer from Anthony Palermo to double his team's lead (4-0).
• Egan was cruising through the CMSV lineup until the bottom of the sixth when back-to-back two-baggers resulted in their first and only run of the ballgame.
• The Bears padded their lead in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded single from Palermo and a Kevin Reyes two-run double, and their cushion proved to be enough as they held on in the bottom half.

How It Happened (Game 2)

• Each team started slowly on offense once again, but this time the Dolphins struck first on an RBI double by Justin Varvaro in the last half of the third for a 1-0 lead. The Bears bounced back in the fifth after Palermo drove in DeLuca tie knot things up at one.
• CMSV nearly took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Matt DiNorcia doubled with a man on first, but left fielder Kyle McLaughlin gunned the runner down at the plate to keep the game tied.
• Seven scheduled innings weren't enough for either side to gain an edge, but the Bears started strong in the top of the eighth as Michael Ryan reached via error and advanced to third on a Joseph Langan base knock. Then, with two outs, DeLuca delivered with his second two-run double of the day, giving SJC enough offense to secure the victory.

For the Bears

• Schwartz (5-for-6, 2 R, 2B) and Palermo (5-for-9, 4 RBI, R) each put up multiple hits in both games, while leadoff man Justus Acosta went 3-for-9 with a run scored on the day.
• K. McLaughlin (3-for-4, R) and Reyes (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) shined in game one while Egan secured his first win of the year (6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K), and J.J. McLaughlin combined with Andrew Watters for three scoreless innings of relief.
• Peter Terranova also earned his first win of 2018 in game two with a complete game (8 IP) allowing five hits and just one run and one walk on top of five strikeouts.
