Baseball Upended by Farmingdale Twice

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — In their second Skyline doubleheader of the weekend, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) baseball team (10-12-1, 3-9 Skyline) traveled to Farmingdale State College (20-5, 9-1 Skyline) falling in two one-sided losses despite a hit from sophomore Michael Ryan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) in both contests.

How It Happened (Game 1): Farmingdale 11, St. Joseph's 1
SJC Starters: Schwartz (SS), Langan (RF), Palermo (3B), Reyes (LF), Ryan (C), DeLuca (1B), Trudden (2B), Zinser (CF), Lombardi (DH); Egan (P)

The Bears went down one-two-three in the top of the first and Farmingdale opened the scoring in the bottom, despite a leadoff strikeout, using three singles, a walk, and a two-run double to establish an early 4-0 lead.

Neither side found a way to score for the next three frames, but SJC got on the board in the top of the fifth after Matthew Trudden (Broad Channel, N.Y./Christ the King) hit a leadoff single and Adam Schwartz (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) later tripled him home cutting the score to 4-1.

FSC tallied two runs in each of the next three innings and another one in the eighth while holding the Bears to just one hit over that span to pull away for a double-digit triumph as 10 different Rams recorded a hit and Matthew Constantine earned the win on the mound going 6.2 innings allowing just one run with no walks and eight strikeouts.

How It Happened (Game 2): Farmingdale 10, St. Joseph's 1
SJC Starters: Schwartz (SS), Palermo (3B), Ryan (DH), Reyes (LF), DeLuca (1B), Trudden (2B), Zinser (CF), Caputo (C), McLaughlin (RF); Juliano (P)

A St. Joseph's triple in the first was erased with a double play to end the inning and the Rams answered with two runs as a single, sac bunt, and balk put a runner at third followed by an RBI groundout and solo homer for a 2-0 lead after one.

Farmingdale tacked on two more scores in the second on a two-out error and added another pair of runs in the third extending the advantage to 6-0 halfway through game two.

Jason Conti notched an RBI single in the fourth and a wild pitch plated another runner and the Rams added two more insurance runs in the sixth as the lead held and they moved to first place in the league standings.

The Bears scored their lone run of the game on a Kevin Reyes (Bronx, N.Y./AECI) RBI double in the top of the seventh scoring Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) (walk) but they dropped their fifth-straight outing with the sweep.

For the Bears

  • Palermo tripled, Reyes doubled (RBI), Ryan went 1-for-2, and J.J. McLaughlin (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) had a single in two at bats — all in game two.
  • Trudden was 2-for-3 in the first contest with a run scored and Schwartz was 1-for-4 (3B, RBI).
  • Matthew Rienzi (Maspeth, N.Y./Xavier) tossed 1.2 perfect innings of relief across both games allowing no hits, runs, or walks.
