Christopher Newport Takes Saturday Doubleheader from Baseball

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team was dealt a pair of losses, 11-0 and 12-2, by Coast-2-Coast Conference school Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened (Game 1):

A three-run home run led off the bottom of the first inning for the Captains (22-6) before a pair of runs scored the following inning, 5-0. A scoreless third inning was followed by two-run stanzas in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings; headlined by a two-run homer in the fifth to give CNU the 11-0 win.

How it Happened (Game 2):

Highlighted by a two-run home run to right field with one out in the first, the hosts hit the Bears for seven over the first two frames. SJBK starter Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) was able to cool off the CNU bats resulting in a scoreless third and fourth inning.

Christopher Newport resumed the scoring with a four-run fifth inning and a solo shot to left field in the sixth, their fourth home run of the day, to lead 12-0. The Bears did see a pair of runners cross the plate in the top of the seventh to confirm the 12-2 margin.

For the Bears (Game 1):

  • Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) each went 1-for-3.

  • Mike Medina Jr. (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) and Sean Schneeberg (Columbia, Tenn./Del Oro) joined Leary and Collet as the lone SJBK baserunners of the contest.

  • Starting pitcher Justin Conaty (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) allowed nine of CNU's 11 runs in defeat. He and reliever Matt McHugh (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) combined to strike out four batters.

For the Bears (Game 2):

  • Collet had the lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double.

  • Miguel Toribio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep) and Alex Goldberg (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) scored the Bears' run in the contest.

  • Goldberg and Doug Paider (Glendale, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) were each credited with an RBI.

  • Lombardi was dealt the defeat after four innings pitched on the mound with a pair of strikeouts and three walks conceded.

  • Carmine Carbone (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) struck out two in his lone inning of relief.
