Baseball Completes Season Sweep of John Jay

Baseball Completes Season Sweep of John Jay

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team defeated John Jay College, 15-6, on Wednesday afternoon on Long Island.

Sean Schneeberg (Columbia, Tenn./Del Oro) had a three-hit game with a pair of RBI while Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) batted in three runs and was one of four Bears with two hits.

How it Happened

Scoring began in the second inning as the Bears (8-12) plated four runs on three consecutive hits, including a triple from Leary. The Bloodhounds (2-27) quickly responded with a five-run third to overtake the navy and gray. John Jay's lead was short-lived as a pair of bunts, from TJ Moussette (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) and Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep), in the bottom half put St. Joseph's back on top, 6-5.

The visitors were able to tie the contest at six in the fourth but Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored on Schneeberg's base knock, placing the Bears in the lead for good, 7-5.

An SJBK run scored in the sixth before breaking the game open in the seventh behind a six-run stanza that featured Leary and Gardener's driving in two runs each and Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) triple that found the right-center field gap to score Gardener.

Dominic Yumul (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands/Marianas) singled to lead off the eighth and scored from first on a Bloodhound pick-off attempt gone awry to confirm the 15-6 scoreline.

For the Bears

  • In addition to three RBI, Leary scored a run as he went 2-for-6.

  • Gardener, Lombardi, and Arcati joined Schneeberg with two RBI.

  • Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

  • Arcati finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

  • Rookie starter Carmine Carbone (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) lasted 2.1 innings with four strikeouts and a pair of earned runs. He settled for the no decision.

  • Justin Conaty (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) struck out six and allowed an earned run and walk in four relief innings for his second win of the season.
