Lombardi, Schneeberg Homer in Baseball’s Split with USMMA

TEANECK, N.J. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team split their Sunday conference doubleheader with the United States Merchant Marine Academy; taking game one 7-5 while dropping game two 9-5.

How it Happened (Game 1)

Possessing a 1-0 lead in the third inning with runners on the corners, Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) belted a three-run shot over the right-center field fence to extend the navy and gray's lead to 4-0. USMMA pulled a run back in the top of the fourth before a four-run fifth gave the visitors a one-run edge, 5-4. A bases-loaded walk drew the game level at five.

Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) singled in the eventual winning run in the home half of the sixth inning before adding an insurance run to see out the 7-5 result.

How it Happened (Game 2)

A pair of runs scored on Chris Leary's (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) single down the left-field line in the second inning. A fourth-inning homer brought USMMA's deficit to one before tying the game at two later in the stanza. The lead swung in the Mariners' favor in the sixth on a two-RBI single, increasing to 7-2 in the seventh. The Bears would score in each of the final three innings, including a Sean Schneeberg (Columbia, Tenn./Del Oro) home run to chop the Merchant Marine advantage to 9-5. The homer sparked a comeback bid as the bases were loaded and the game-tying run was at-bat. However, SJBK left all three runners on, suffering the four-run defeat.

  • Lombardi's homer brought in three of the Bears' five RBI. Schneeberg and Collet had the other two.

  • Carmine Carbone (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

  • Rookie Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep) had a 3-for-4 game with a run scored.
