Baseball Suffers Narrow 13-Inning Defeat, Sweep by St. Joseph’s Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team was dealt a pair of defeats by sibling school St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday afternoon. A marathon game one ended 4-3 after 13 innings while game two finished 12-5.

How it Happened (Game 1)

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the first before the Bears used RBI singles from Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) and Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) to claim a 2-1 advantage.

The Brooklyn advantage increased to 3-1 in the sixth thanks to Sean Schneeberg's (Columbia, Tenn./Del Oro) third home run of the season, a belter to left-center field. A Long Island two-bagger plated a pair of runs to tie the contest 3-3.

Despite both sides finding the go-ahead run 90 feet away from scoring, the stalemate remained over the course of the next six-and-a-half innings. Shortstop Mike DiFilippo gave the hosts the 4-3 win on a leadoff walk-off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning.

How it Happened (Game 2)

Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored on a Lombardi single in the top of the first. Long Island responded in their half of the first with five runs of their own. The Bears tied the contest at 5-5 with a pair of two-run innings in the second and third. Nick Tapio (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers) drove in a run in the second while the side took advantage of an SJLI error in the third.

A two-run homer in the fourth gave the Golden Eagles a 7-5 edge, a lead they held onto for the rest of the game. Two more runs scored in the fifth and three in the sixth to give the hosts a 12-7 win and sweep of the Bears.
