Baseball Splits Sunday Twin Bill with Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Lucas Collet's (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue) 4-for-4 game and Mike Santoriello's (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) complete-game shutout propelled the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Purchase College on Sunday afternoon. Trailing 10-2 in game two, the Bears used a five-run eighth inning to close their deficit to 11-8 but the Panthers added insurance runs to secure a 14-8 win and series split.

How it Happened (Game 1)

Collet scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Sean Schneeberg (Columbia, Tenn./Del Oro). The shortstop's double in the third managed to score Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) from first base. Schneeberg later scored on Louis Lombardi's (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) single to left, giving the Bears a 3-0 lead.

The fourth inning saw rookie Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep) single down the right field line to plate SJBK's fourth run before scoring on Collet's second double of the contest, 5-0. Collet's third RBI of the game came in the sixth inning, scoring TJ Moussette (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) to confirm the 6-0 result.

How it Happened (Game 2)

A pair of homers in the third, in addition to RBI base knocks over the course of the first three stanzas, saw the hosts hold an 8-0 advantage. A bases-loaded hit by pitch and Michael Gardener's (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) single in the next two frames put the Bears on the board, now trailing 10-2.

Placed in a seven-run hole entering the eighth, the Bears used a five-run inning to cut their deficit to 11-8. Leary and Lombardi each sent home a pair of runners thanks to a double to center and single to right, respectively. Schneeberg also doubled to see Leary cross the plate.

The Panthers held on to the lead, scoring an additional three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 14-8.

  • Schneeberg joined Collet in having a multi-hit game.

  • Schneeberg, Lombardi, and Arcati combined for three RBI, rounding out the team's six.
