Baseball Celebrates Senior Day Against Mount Saint Mary

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team concluded the 2023 season with defeats to Mount Saint Mary College, 5-1 and 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.

The senior quintet of Chris Leary (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), Lucas Collet (Toulouse, France/Lyc'ee Bellevue), Matt McHugh (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), Sean Henris (Commack, N.Y./Commack), and Omar Salcedo (New York, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) were honored prior to their final games in a Bears uniform.

How it Happened (Game 1)

A pair of RBI doubles, along with a triple, gave the Knights a 4-0 lead after four complete.

Collet trimmed the SJBK deficit to three, 4-1, on a double down the left field line to score Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep). However, the visitors restored their four-run advantage in the seventh inning to see out a 5-1 win.

How it Happened (Game 2)

In his final game, Louis Lombardi (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) delivered an impressive performance on the mound, pitching four scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. However, in the fifth, MSMC managed to take a 3-0 lead before Carmine Carbone (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) hit a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the inning, narrowing the Knights' lead to just one run.

Mount Saint Mary added another run in the sixth inning, but Nick Tapio (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers) hit a double in the seventh, allowing Carbone to score and bringing the score to 4-3. However, the Knights hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning, securing their 5-3 victory.

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • Collet batted 2-for-3 with an RBI. He also stole three bases.

  • Arcati, Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), and TJ Moussette (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) all registered base hits.

  • Mike Santoriello (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) pitched a complete game and struck out five despite suffering the defeat.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • Carbone went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. His homer was the first of his collegiate career.

  • Moussette finished 2-for-4.

  • Collet had another two-hit game. He concludes his collegiate career with a career slugging percentage of .368, on-base percentage of .349, and 97 hits.

  • Lombardi fanned six Knights in five innings in the defeat. He racked up 129.2 innings pitched and logged 130 strikeouts in five seasons at St. Joseph's.

  • Justin Conaty (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) struck out five in 3.2 relief innings.

  • The Bears close the 2023 season at 11-25 overall, the most wins under head coach Peter Blumenauer since 2017. They also finished with a conference mark of 6-14.
