McQuillan Named AD3I Rookie of the Year, Maddox and Gist Named Second Team All-Independent

(KANSAS CITY, MO)  Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep), a freshman point guard for the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team, was named the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) rookie of the year in press releases released by the conference earlier this week naming the 2009 All-Independent Basketball Teams.  McQuillan also was named to the second team all-independent.  On the men's side, senior Ervin Maddox (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) and sophomore Justin Gist (Brooklyn, NY/Newsome) were also named to the second team all-independent.

McQuillan was a two-time AD3I player of the week and the AD3I student-athlete of the month for December.  McQuillan recorded three 30+ point games this season and was the leading scorer for the Lady Bears averaging 16.0 points, 2.8 steals and 2.6 assists.  Across AD3I, McQuillan was ranked third in steals, fifth in scoring and 10th in assists.  At one point during the season, McQuillan was ranked sixth in scoring across Division III nationally and held two of the top 10 individual scoring games this season.

Maddox was second on the Bears in scoring averaging 12.8 points, 4.6 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals.  Maddox was among the leaders in AD3I in most statistical categories, leading AD3I in assists, fourth in steals, fifth in three-point FG percentage, seventh in scoring, and 13th in FG percentage.  The senior point guard started all 27 games for the Bears and averaged over 30 minutes a game.  For his career, Maddox finished with 1334 points, shooting 42.3 percent and dishing out 426 assists.

Gist, the other half of the backcourt tandem, led the Bears in scoring averaging 14.3 points.  Like Maddox, Gist was among the leaders in AD3I offensively, ranked third in steals (2.04), fifth in scoring and assists (2.31), ninth in free-throw percentage (.711), 12th in three-point FG made (1.23) 15th  in three-point FG percentage (.286) and 19th in rebounding.  Gist had six games of 20+ points and started in all 26 games he appeared in.

The All-Independent teams are selected by the basketball coaches from the Association of Division III Independents member schools.
