Balanced Attack Leads NJCU Past Bears

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Sophomore guard Antoine Forehand (New York, NY/Rice) scored a team-high 12 points and junior forward Jon Matzelle (Maspeth, NY/St. Francis Prep) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in a 73-48 non-conference loss to New Jersey City University (3-1) at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Monday night.

A jumper from Forehand on St. Joseph's opening possession gave the Bears their only lead of the game as NJCU scored the next nine points.  The Bears clipped the Gothic Knights lead to three at 9-6, but a 12-1 run pushed the NJCU lead to double digits and which they carried into the lockers 35-18.

NJCU shot an improved 45.7% (16-for-35) in the second half holding firm control of the lead for the remainder of the game.  St. Joseph's trailed 50-38 in rebounding and committed 12 more turnovers (28-16) which led to 23 Gothic Knight points.

Forehand scored in double-figures for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career.  This is the third time this season Matzelle has led the team in rebounds and the first time a Bear has had double-digit rebounds this season.  Freshman guard Cesar Madera chipped in seven points in 23 minutes as a reserve with five points coming from the charity stripe.

Josh Lopez tallied a game-high 15 points with five rebounds and four assists to lead 15 Gothic Knights that scored in the game.

St. Joseph's (1-5) returns to the hardwood hosting Lehman College for a non-conference tilt on Saturday, December 5 at 6 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School.
