Bears Dominate Sarah Lawrence To Remain Undefeated in HVMAC

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College men's basketball team remained undefeated in Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference play, defeating Sarah Lawrence College 80-51 on Wednesday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.  Junior Jon Matzelle (Maspeth, NY/St. Francis Prep) and senior Mike Dziewit (Ridgewood, NY/Wadleigh) led the Bears turning in double-double performances.

Matzelle recorded his fifth double-double this season scoring a team-high 16 points with 10 rebounds.

Dziewit recorded his second career double-double by pulling down 19 rebounds (11 defensive) and scoring 10 points.  The 19 rebounds falls one shy of the individual game record set twice by Luke Caccavo in 2003 and Dane Bruce in 2007.

Junior guard Justin Gist (Newsome, FL/Newsome) scored 15 points, Larry Fawcett (Middle Village, NY/Christ the King) chipped in 11 points, draining three three-pointers and Antoine Forehand (New York, NY/Rice) dished out a game-high five assists.

Junior guard Max Mallory (Decatur HS/New York, NY) led Sarah Lawrence (2-6, 0-3 HVMAC) scoring a game-high 22 points, draining six three-pointers.  Graduate student Michael Shane (Fieldston HS/New York, NY) tallied a 17 point, 10 rebound double-double.

Sarah Lawrence took an early 5-2 lead on a Mallory triple and Shane jumper, but St. Joseph's went on a 16-3 run to take the lead for good and extend it to double digits.  The Bears led by as many as 19 before taking a 41-27 advantage at the break.

The Bears, who have never lost to Sarah Lawrence in nine meetings, extended their lead above 20 early in the second half, where it was never threatened.

St. Joseph's dominated inside scoring 46 points in the paint and holding a 71-49 rebounding advantage.  The Bears also combined for a season-high 18 steals forcing 24 turnovers which accounted for 31 points.  All 10 Bears scored at least one field goal and bench scoring (46) nearly matched the Sarah Lawrence total (51).

St. Joseph's remains undefeated in the HVMAC and continues conference play on Saturday, February 6th against Albany College of Pharmacy (6-7. 3-1 HVMAC) as the marquee game of the Alumni, Friends and Family Doubleheader.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
