Retas and Megafu Named AD3I Student-Athletes of the Month

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball forward Samantha Retas (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) and men's basketball forward Michael Megafu (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional) have been selected as the Association of Division III (AD3I) Student-Athletes of the Month for December.

Retas had a breakout month for the Lady Bears averaging 17.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 blocks over a 4-3 stretch for the month of December. In addition to being a three-time AD3I Player of the Week winner last month (12/3, 12/11 & 12/27), she recorded five double-doubles and scored 20 or more points in four out of the last five games. The sophomore forward's December was highlighted by a 26-point, 15-rebound double-double (then career highs) in a come-from-behind victory over Pomona-Pitzer on December 26.

Megafu led the Bears to a 3-1 record in December recording double-doubles in all four games, which vaulted him to third in Division III, with eight to date this season. He was named AD3I Player of the Week twice last month (12/11, 12/17) and averaged 18.5 points, 16.0 rebounds and shot 66.0 percent from the field (33-of-50). The freshman forward's month was highlighted by a 31-point, 20-rebound double-double – the first 30/20 game in Bears history – in the double-overtime victory over rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on December 7th.

Retas and Megafu follow sophomore David Louison (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) who earned Student-Athlete of the Month honors in November.

The Lady Bears (6-7) return to the court tonight hosting Briarcliffe College at 7:30 p.m. while the Bears (8-4) hit the road to face the College of Staten Island tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
