O'Neill and Doherty Land on Skyline Honor Roll

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Bears senior Matt O'Neill (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Lady Bears freshman Shannon Doherty (Brooklyn, N.Y./Churchill) were named to the Skyline Conference honor roll for outstanding effort over the week ending December 6, the league office announced yesterday.

O'Neill averaged 16.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.3 steals over a three-game span for the men's basketball team. In Bears home game against  Old Westbury last Wednesday, the senior guard scored his 1,000th career point with a career-high-tying 27. He scored 11-straight SJC points in a span of just over two minutes to propel the Bears past the Panthers, 81-63.

O'Neill currently leads the Skyline Conference and is ranked third in Division III in steals per game (4.2) and his 17.5 points per contest is third best in the league.

Doherty etched her name on her third individual SJC record— and fifth overall—in the women's swimming dual meet at Hunter last Friday. The freshman took a nearly 10-second victory in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:12.93. She also helped the medley and relay squads to a pair of second-place finishes.

O'Neill and the Bears return to action tonight squaring off again sibling rivals SJC Long Island in the inaugural Skyline Conference meeting. The Bears look to move to 4-1 in league play with their fourth straight victory over the Golden Eagles. Tip-off at the Danzi Center is at 8 p.m. with live stats on SJCBears.com.

Doherty and the Lady Bears have the week off but will face John Jay College on Monday, December 14 in a road non-conference dual meet.
