O'Neill Named to D3hoops.com All-Atlantic Region Third Team

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Adding to an impressive resume that saw him finish third in scoring in the Skyline Conference and lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team to the title game in their first year in the league, senior Matt O'Neill (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) has been named to the D3hoops.com All-Atlantic Region Third Team announced earlier today.

At the conclusion of the regular season, O'Neill was recognized by the league as an All-Conference first-team selection as he led the Bears as the top offense in the league posting 79.5 points per game.  In addition to finishing third in scoring at 18.1 points per game, the 5-foot-11 guard scored in double figures in 25-of-28 games, finishing with 20-or-more points in 11 of those games. The St. Edmund Prep product made SJC Brooklyn history compiling the first recorded triple-double in Bears history with 15 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds against Maritime in the Bears regular season finale on February 17 and recorded six double-doubles on the season.

The Brooklyn native averaged a Skyline-best 3.3 steals per game, ranked fifth in Division III, and became the Bears all-time career leader in the category, leading all active players across all three divisions with 315 thefts. O'Neill was ranked second in the conference with 4.8 assists and completed a solid all-around effort this season with 7.1 rebounds per game, second-best on the team. In addition to joining the coveted 1,000-point scoring club this season, the senior also scored a career-high 36 points vs. Sarah Lawrence on January 9, the most points in a single-game by a Bear in 12 years.

O'Neill becomes just the third SJC Brooklyn men's basketball player to receive All-Region honors following fellow All-Skyline honoree Michael Megafu (Jamaica, N.Y/Nazareth Regional) and David Louison '15, who were All-Atlantic Region Second Team selections in 2014 and 2015, respectively. He is one of two players from the Skyline Conference to be honored, with Skyline Player of the Year Jamail Stanley of SUNY Old Westbury named to the second team.

It's the 15th season D3hoops.com has named All-Region teams with players nominated by sports information directors at the various schools.
