O'Neill Garners All-Met Third-Team Honors

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Capping off an impressive senior campaign that saw him receive All-Skyline Conference First Team and D3hoops.com All-Atlantic Region Third Team honors, senior Matt O'Neill (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) has been named to the All-Met Division III Men's Basketball Third Team by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.

O'Neill and the All-Met Team honorees will honored April 12 at the 83rd NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner at the Westchester Marriott, Tarrytown, NY.

O'Neill led the Bears to a cinderella run at the Skyline title, advancing to the championship final as a No. 6 seed in their first season in the league and finishing the season 15-13.

The 5-foot-11 guard powered the Bears as the top scoring offense in the league posting 79.5 points per game at the end of the regular season.  In addition to finishing third in scoring at 18.1 points per game, O'Neill scored in double figures in 25-of-28 games, finishing with 20-or-more points in 11 of those games. The St. Edmund Prep product made SJC Brooklyn history compiling the first recorded triple-double in Bears history with 15 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds against Maritime in the Bears regular season finale on February 17 and recorded six double-doubles on the season.

The Brooklyn native averaged a Skyline-best 3.3 steals per game, ranked fifth in Division III, and became the Bears all-time career leader in the category, leading all active players across all three divisions with 315 thefts. O'Neill was ranked second in the conference with 4.8 assists and completed a solid all-around effort this season with 7.1 rebounds per game, second-best on the team. In addition to joining the coveted 1,000-point scoring club this season, the senior also scored a career-high 36 points vs. Sarah Lawrence on January 9, the most points in a single-game by a Bear in 12 years.

The third leading scorer in the Skyline Conference becomes the second St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) player to receive All-Met recognition following David Louison '15 who was a first-team honoree last year. O'Neill joins Old Westbury's Jamail Stanley and Yeshiva's Shelby Rosenberg as the Skyline Conference's three representatives.
