Men’s Basketball Unable to Best Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Chris Mikos (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) turned in his fifth double-double of the season as the senior scored 13 points and pulled 12 rebounds. However, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team (1-12, 0-5 Skyline) fell to Mount Saint Mary College (5-6, 3-0 Skyline), 66-49 on Saturday afternoon.

Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) joined Mikos in double-figure scoring as he scored 10 points while Richie Simon (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) attacked the boards for a game-high 13 rebounds.

How It Happened

Sirakis opened the contest with a corner three before the Knights scored 10 of the next 12 to lead 10-5 after five minutes. The Bears held on to a single-digit deficit for much of the opening 10 minutes, trailing by nine at the 10:35 mark. Three-pointers from the game's leading scorer Chris Yearwood and Jayden Racca gave MSMC a sizable cushion as they entered the half with a 38-26 advantage.

The Knights kept SJC off the board for nearly three minutes to begin the second half. The stretch ended with Joseph Ghotra (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) draining both of his free throws and a layup by Anderson Beltre (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Holy Cross); trimming the Mount Saint Mary lead to 11 in the process, 41-33. It was the closest the Bears would get as the hosts distanced themselves in the final 12 minutes to continue their unblemished start to conference play.

For the Bears

  • Mikos scored 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting. He also totaled four assists, a pair of blocks, and a steal

  • Sirakis registered four boards and a pair of takeaways.

  • Simon had his fifth game with double-digit rebounds to go with eight points, two steals, and a block.

  • Chris Williams (Trenton, N.J./Nottingham) totaled six points.
