Men’s Basketball Tripped Up by Sarah Lawrence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Despite a Bears (2-13,1-6 Skyline) trio in double figures, including 16 points from Chris Mikos (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) and a career-high 13 from junior Joe Sheehan (Staten Island, N.Y./Gaynor McCown), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team fell 86-65 to Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday afternoon from The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The contest was close for much of the opening 10 minutes with neither side leading by more than five. The Gryphons (4-8, 2-3 Skyline) took a 10-point lead at the 9:02 mark, 25-15, but the Bears cut the deficit to six thanks to Sheehan's drive to the cup and a three-ball from Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), 27-21. With the deficit at eight courtesy of Mikos banking his free throws, 36-28, Sarah Lawrence went on a 10-0 run to close out the half up 46-28.

The visitors continued to break away in the second period, leading by as many as 29 – their biggest lead of the game – with 12:42 on the clock. The Bears proceeded to score nine of their next 14 points off Gryphon turnovers, outscoring the opposition 25-15 in that department, bringing them to within 19. It was the closest SJC got to Sarah Lawrence in the second half as they fell to the Gryphons for the first time since January 2019.

For the Bears

  • Mikos' 16 points, seven boards, and six assists were all team highs. He also recorded a steal.

  • Sheehan's 13 points set a new career-high as he added five boards, a pair of rejections, and an assist to his stat line.

  • Sirakis finished with 11 points, three caroms, and as many assists.
