Men's Basketball Dealt Skyline-Opening Defeat by Yeshiva

NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) men's basketball team opened their Skyline Conference campaign with a 102-65 loss to Yeshiva University on Wednesday night from the Max Stern Athletic Center.

Rookie Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) led the team with 28 points while senior Joe Sheehan (Staten Island, N.Y./Gaynor McCown) had 17 on the night. Sheehan also led the side with eight boards.

How it Happened

A Reno three-pointer, courtesy of Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) snapped the Maccabees' (2-2, 1-0) 12-0 run. It kickstarted a period in which the Bears (1-1, 0-1) clawed to within three, 17-14, before coming to within one at 13:09 on the clock, 17-16. It was the closest the Bears came to the hosts as they began separating themselves; with Yeshiva holding a 52-36 advantage at the intermission.

The Maccabees' led ultimately grew to as many as 39 before earning their first conference triumph, 102-65.

  • Sheehan's 17 points are a new career-high.
  • Reno shot 9-of-11 from the free-throw line and forced two steals.
  • Anderson Beltre (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Holy Cross) dished out five dimes and scored six points.
  • Adam Jasaraj (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) collected five boards while Beltre and Joshua Gordon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each had four.
  • Sirakis issued three assists to go with as many rebounds.
