Maritime Sinks Men's Basketball

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team suffered a 90-71 defeat at the hands of SUNY Maritime College on Saturday afternoon from Riesenberg Gymnasium.

How it Happened 

After being placed in an early 6-0 hole, Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) netted the Bears' (4-11, 1-5) first eight points, trailing 9-8 at 13:56. As the Privateers (8-7, 4-2) briefly got cold, St. Joseph's took advantage, possessing a 16-15 lead midway through the first half. The hosts regained the lead with 7:46 on the clock; ended the period on a 26-4 run to hold a 41-20 advantage into the interval.

The Bears were unable to cut Maritime's margin by any more than 18, ultimately falling 90-71.

For the Bears

  • Sirakis scored a team-high 18 points while Adam Jasaraj (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) pulled a game-leading 11 boards.

  • Chris Williams (Trenton, N.J./Nottingham) finished with 11 points, four steals, and three assists.

  • Jalen Gist (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evers Prep) dropped 10 points and collected a trio of caroms.
