Old Westbury Knocks Off Men’s Basketball

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team was dealt an 85-60 defeat by the SUNY College at Old Westbury on Wednesday night from Nold Hall on the campus of Farmingdale State College.

How it Happened

The Panthers (3-18, 3-10) raced out to a momentum-setting 16-2 run to begin the contest. Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Samil Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Adams Street) provided a large portion of the scoring for the Bears (5-17, 2-11). Despite their efforts, along with Joe Sheehan's (Staten Island, N.Y/Gaynor McCown) five rebounds, the hosts held a 54-29 advantage at the half.

Old Westbury added more distance between themselves and the Bears as their lead grew to as many as 38, 69-31. Sirakis finished with 15 points on the night while Anderson Beltre (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Holy Cross) posted 11 of his own as St. Joseph's ultimately fell 85-60.

For the Bears

  • Sirakis' 15 points mark the fifth consecutive double-digit scoring game. He also had four rebounds and as many assists.

  • Beltre neared a double-double as he pulled seven boards.

  • Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) finished with eight points and four rebounds.

  • Melo had seven points and as many caroms.
