Bears Drop Home Opener to Culinary

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College men's soccer team dropped an 8-1 decision to conference foe Culinary Institute of America in their first home game as a varsity program on Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn Technical High School field.

Culinary (4-2, 4-1 HVMAC) got on the board in the 12th minute on a Davis Hood goal on a nice feed by Rob Chambers to set up a 1-on-1 situation with the goalie. The Steels tacked on two more goals before the end of the half, taking a 3-0 lead at the intermission.

Culinary built their lead to 6-0 before the Bears managed their only tally of the game with junior forward Gabriel Gonzalez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/25 de Agosto) scoring on a penalty kick in the 77th minute after the Culinary defense played a hand ball in the penalty box.

Freshman goalie Michael Miner (Schenevus, NY/Schenevus) was spectacular in the front of the home crowd making 17 saves in a losing effort, facing another barrage of 38 shots. Gonzalez finished with four of St. Joseph's seven shots, three on goal.

Pablo Noriega led the Steels with a pair of goals on nine shots and added an assist. Anthony Attanasio also scored twice and Pierre Mewissen contributed a goal and an assist. Dan Moreno earned the win in goal, making two saves and holding the Bears scoreless in 64 minutes of play.

St. Joseph's (0-2, 0-2 HVMAC) continues a three-game home stand at Brooklyn Technical High School field hosting Medgar Evers College on Thursday, September 29 in a non-conference match starting at 4:30 p.m.
