Miner Makes Season High 20 Saves in Loss to Yeshiva

YONKERS, NY – For the second straight game, the St. Joseph's College men's soccer team trailed by one goal at the intermission, but couldn't find the equalizer, falling 5-0 to Yeshiva on Tuesday night in a non-conference game played at Tibbetts Brook Park.

Yeshiva (1-9) scored the eventual game winner just before the end of the opening 45, with Daniel Benchimol scoring on a feed from Benjamin Guigui in the 44th minute. Benchimol would score again in the 82nd minute to lead the Maccabees with two goals and Guigui would record assists on the next two Yeshiva goals and add a goal of his own in the 85th minute.

Freshman goalie Michael Miner (Schenevus, NY/Schenevus) made seven saves in the first half to keep the Bears at a one-goal deficit. Miner finished the game with a season-high 20 saves, facing 39 shots. In the latest NCAA Statistics report, Miner was ranked #2 in the nation in Division III in saves per game, averaging 12.5 for games played through October 23.

The St. Joseph's offense struggled to generate scoring opportunities and failed to record a shot for the contest. The Bears were without the services of Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial), Gabriel Gonzalez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/25 de Agosto) and Derrick Akwei (Bronx, NY/Port Angeles HS) who account for over three quarters of the Bears scoring for the season.

St. Joseph's (1-10) concludes Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference play on Thursday, October 27th facing Cooper Union at Aviator Field starting at 8:30 p.m.
