Newcomers Lead the Way for Men's Soccer in Season-Opening Shutout of The New School

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer got their 2014 campaign off to a solid start with some newcomers making their mark in a 4-0 shutout of The New School in their 2014 season opener on Thursday night at Calvert Vaux Park.

Two newcomers paced the way for the Bears (1-0) in their first game of their collegiate careers. Beka Goduadze notched a goal and dished an assist, while Benny Barrios had a goal and an assist of his own in a winning effort.

St. Joseph's scored just 5:10 into the game, where another rookie Pandeli Mano netted his first career goal, the eventual game winner, on a volley after a deflection in the box to grab the early lead. The game was evenly played throughout the opening 45 with the Bears holding on to the 1-0 lead at the break.

Three minutes into the second half, Goduadze registered his first career goal from a Barrio corner kick, heading in the service to the back post.

Senior Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) padded the lead with a goal in the 52nd minute with the 25th goal of his career. Barrios capped the scoring, finding the back on the net from the top of the box in the 68th minute.

Bears goalie Michael Miner (Schenevus, N.Y./ Schenevus) tallied four saves in the win for his second career shutout, while Eric Wade made six saves while taking the loss for the Narwhals (0-1).
