First-Half Flurry Propels Men's Soccer over Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) erupted for six goals in the first half as they defeated Medgar Evers, 9-2 on Wednesday night at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

The Bears (5-5) have now reached five wins in a season for the first time in the team's history, and have returned to the .500 mark.

Freshman Beka Goduadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/Lyceum "NK") led the charge with his first career hat trick to increase his total to a team-high eight goals. Raul Urshela (Orlando, Fla/Colonial) added two goals to extend his all-time scoring mark to 30.

Zeakiel Daley tallied both of the goals for the Cougars (6-5-1) in the first half in a losing effort.

St. Joseph's got the scoring early on when Bencion Barrios (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored his fifth goal of the season in the ninth minute. Thomas Homier (Middleton, Del./Middletown) and Michael Ortiz (Bushwick, N.Y./Christ the King Regional) helped push the lead to 4-0. The lead at halftime would be 6-2 following two Goduadze scores, including a penalty shot.

In the second half, Goduadze and Urshela would both within a minute of each other. Junior Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) would cap off the scoring by securing his first career goal in the 87th minute following a deflection.

St. Joseph's outshot the Cougars 30-9, and also led in corner kicks at 9-4.

The team gets back on the pitch on Friday, October 17th when they host Sarah Lawrence at the Aviator Sports and Events Center. Start time is at 7:30 PM.
