Garcia and Goncalves Power Men’s Soccer Past Medgar Evers for First Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Leading goal scorers Kenneth Garcia (Elmhurst, N.Y./Bayside) and Daniel Goncalves (Astoria, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) led the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team over Medgar Evers College on Monday evening, 2-1. The victory put the Bears in the win column, improving to 1-9-1.

The Basics

  • Final Score: St. Joseph's 2, Medgar Evers 1
  • Records: St. Joseph's (1-9-1), Medgar Evers (2-12)
  • Location: Brooklyn, N.Y. — Aviator Field

How It Happened

  • On the Bears' first shot of the game, Garcia fired the ball from the middle of the field into the top-right corner of the net (20'), good for a 1-0 lead. The rest of the first half was a defensive battle, as Medgar narrowly outshot SJC (5-2).
  • The second half proved to be just as much of a stalemate. The Cougars were aggressive late in the game, going on a stretch where they shot seven straight goals (55'-72'). However, Goncalves would answer immediately (76'), sending a shot from the middle to the left of the keeper for the game-winner.
  • With the Bears' lead at 2-0, the Cougars looked to make it interesting, as Patrick Gentles got them on the board in the 82nd minute. Medgar kept the pressure on until the final whistle seeking the equalizer firing off six more shots, but Alejandro Oliveros made three saves down the stretch to preserve the victory.

For the Bears

  • Garcia scored on five shots (three on goal), giving him five on the year to lead the team.
  • Goncalves fired three shots, all on goal, to earn his netter. It was his second of the season, putting him second on the squad.
  • Freshman Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) notched his second career game with double-digit saves, snagging 10.
