BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Freshman Diego Volpe's (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) right-footed blast from 30 yards out broke a scoreless stalemate after 103 minutes of action, powering the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's soccer team to a 1-0 triumph over Hunter College on Saturday evening at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.
The highlight-reel win was the first double-overtime win in program history and just the second overtime triumph. The Bears (1-1) pick up their first win of the season and notch their first win over the Hawks (0-2) in four meetings all-time.
How it Happened
- The match was evenly contested with both sides finding limited scoring opportunities and both squads surrendering just two corners apiece.
- The Hawks held an 11-8 shot advantage, including 6-2 in shots on goals—but the Bears held a 55%-45% possession edge.
- Abdul Altabchi (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) nearly opened the scoring in the 36th minute when his shot from 35 yards out hit the top of the crossbar and sailed over.
- The Hawks finished regulation with a 10-5 shot edge, but were plagued by a second stanza that saw seven bookings and saw a player sent off in the 89th minute.
- Early in the first overtime session, Leonel Bravo's (Astoria, N.Y./Queens Vocational & Technical) attempt for the game-winner was turned aside by the Hawks diving keeper.
- Three minutes into the second overtime, Eric Santiago Torres (Woodside, N.Y./Forest Hills) fed a pass to Volpe who settled the ball and fired a shot that found the upper right corner, beating the diving goalie.
- Graduate Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) made six saves in recording his second career shutout.
