Naci, Mejia Notch Hat Trick of Goals, Assists in Men’s Soccer’s Matinee Win Over Maritime

NEW YORK — The partnership of Victor Naci (Bordeaux, France/Bernard Palissy) and Pablo Mejia (Elmhurst, N.Y./Academy of Finance and Enterprise) was in full force as a hat trick of goals and assists, respectively, led the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over SUNY Maritime College on Monday afternoon.

Naci's hat trick brought him level with Kenneth Garcia for the program single-season goalscoring record. He also climbed to second in Division III in goals with 16. Mejia took the team lead in assists with his hat trick of dimes.

How it Happened

Naci began his day with a fourth-minute goal receiving a chip pass from Mejia, controlling the ball with his chest, and slotting home the opener past the keeper diving in the opposite direction. The Privateers (1-9-3, 0-6-2) equalized in the 15' with a header off a corner kick. Less than 10 minutes later, Mejia beat the Maritime defense on the counterattack before finding Naci for the Bears' (4-4-3, 2-3-2) eventual game winner.

A minute past the hour mark with a man advantage, Naci added an insurance goal, shooting in front of an empty net, confirming the 3-1 win.

For The Bears

  • Naci extends his goal-scoring streak to 10 consecutive matches. It is his fourth multi-goal match and first career hat trick.

  • Naci's hat trick is the first for the Bears since Mohamed Ndiaye Jr.'s against St. Joseph's (Long Island) in 2019.

  • Mejia's hat trick of assists set the program's single-match record. The last Bear with multiple assists was teammate Jesus Cano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cristo Rey Brooklyn) against Medgar Evers last season.

  • SJBK outshot the Privateers 21-7, propelled by a 15-4 second half.

  • Leonel Bravo (Astoria, N.Y./Queens Vocational & Technical) finished with three saves.
