Men's Soccer Defeated by USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's soccer team suffered a 4-2 defeat to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday night from Bartoszek Field.

How it Happened

Drew Boukidis gave the Mariners (1-4-4, 1-0-2) the lead in the 18th minute before providing the assist on the team's second goal three minutes later. The Mariners added a third before the halftime whistle in the 35th minute, coming off a corner kick.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Bears (1-6, 0-3) pulled a goal back. Jesus Cano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cristo Rey Brooklyn) laid a ball on the edge of the box to Francisco Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park Slope Collegiate) who found the lower right corner of the goal, cutting their deficit to 3-1. USMMA restored their three-goal advantage in the 69th minute as Boukidis again played provider in Patrick Novotny's goal. 

Arturo Franco (Brooklyn, N.Y./Millennium Brooklyn) added a second for St. Joseph's in the waning moments of the contest, firing a shot in the upper left corner, confirming the 4-2 result.

For the Bears

  • Garcia scored his second goal of the season and led the side with three shots.
  • Cano dished his first assist of the campaign.
  • Victor Naci (Bordeaux, France/Bernard Palissy) and Diego Volpe (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) each had two shots 
  • Lorenzo LaRosa (Astoria, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) registered eight saves, his personal best since moving between the sticks.
