Men’s Soccer Shuts Out SUNY Maritime on the Road

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's soccer team blanked SUNY Maritime College, 2-0, on Tuesday night from Reinhart Field. The win marks the second in as many matches for the Bears and the third consecutive against the Privateers, a streak that dates back to the 2021 season.

How it Happened

The Bears' offensive efforts were dominant in the first half, registering 11 shots compared to the Privateers' three. Despite that, the hosts kept the navy and gray off the board until the last 11 seconds of the period. Bryan Lucero (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Telecommunication Arts & Technology) found himself in a one-on-one encounter with the Maritime keeper. The rookie then provided a ball to Victor Naci (Bordeaux, France/Bernard Palissy) on his right side, allowing Naci to net the ball into a vacant goal, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Maritime registered more shots in the second half but the Bears edged the hosts in that department, 5-3. Jesus Cano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cristo Rey Brooklyn) doubled the SJBK advantage with 6:28 remaining in the match as his shot from a difficult angle ricocheted off the keeper and found its way into the goal.

For the Bears

  • Naci took four of the Bears' 16 shots with two, including his fifth goal of the season, finding the face of goal.

  • Lucero provided his first collegiate assist. Both of his shots were on target.

  • Cano scored his first goal of the season.

  • Cano, Lucero, and Matthew Kieblesz (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) had a pair of shots each.

  • Christian Chimborazo (Elmhurst, N.Y./Queens Technical) preserved a clean sheet in his first collegiate win between the sticks. He had a pair of saves.
