City Tech Defeats Men’s Tennis in Rematch

FLUSHING, NY – St. Joseph's College men's tennis concluded the regular season with a 6-3 loss to City Tech in damp conditions on Thursday night at National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY

Ed Han (McLean, VA/W.T. Woodson) paced the Bears with an 8-5 win at first doubles with Pat Chiarel (Queens, NY/Archbishop Molloy).  He defeated Sebastian Francoisat first singles, 8-4.  Han is currently on a seven-match winning streak heading into the conference tournament on Saturday. 

Jon Matzelle (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Luke Klimaszewski(Queens, NY/St. John's Prep) notched the only other win at second doubles with an 8-4 victory.  The pair has compiled a 3-3 record at second doubles this season.

Matzelle played his first match at second singles and similar to the previous meeting against City Tech on Tuesday, he went to a tiebreak.  However, Matzelle would fall 8-7 (10-6) in the tiebreaker with several points going against him including a controversial ball that was called out by his opponent with the match tied at 6-6.

Matt Walsh (Queens, NY/Long Island City) played another marathon match at sixth singles taking his opponent to the distance in search of his first singles win.  Walsh would fall short again however, losing 8-7 (10-8) in the tiebreaker.

Anthony Grasso (Queens, NY/St. John's Prep) also seeking his first singles win, fell short losing 8-3 at fifth doubles.

St. Joseph's finished fifth in the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC).  The Bears will compete at the conference tournament scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. at the National Tennis Center.
