Men's Tennis Closes Season with Win Over City Tech

FLUSHING, NY – New head tennis coach Andres Escalante picked up the first win of his St. Joseph's career Tuesday night, when his Bears defeated City Tech, 6-3.  Matthew Walsh (Kew Gardens, NY/Long Island City) also notched his first career singles victory.

Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) earned two points for St. Joseph's with wins at first singles and doubles. The 8-0 victory was Bhatti's fourth, giving him a 4-8 record in singles play this season. Bhatti later picked up his second win of the match, 8-1, at first doubles with teammate Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Gardens).

Derick Akwei also contributed two points in the victory, recording his first singles win of the season, 8-6, at fourth singles in a highly competitive match. Akwei later teamed with Martin Torres for an 8-4 victory at second doubles.

Walsh and Conrad Nytko (Brooklyn, NY/Cathedral Prep) rounded out the scoring for St. Joseph's, winning their respective matches. Their wins at fifth and second singles respectively were the first of the season for both of them. Walsh won a thrilling 8-6 match, while Nytko disposed of his opponent, 8-4.
