Men's Tennis Kicks Off the 2014 Season

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) men's tennis team will open their 2014 season on Tuesday afternoon with a match on the road against the Merchant Marine Academy at 4:30 p.m.

After a sixth-place finish in the HVMAC (now the HVIAC) conference tournament last season, the Bears will embark on a 12-game schedule this season under the tutelage of first-year head coach T.C. Huen. The Bears will start with a four-game road stand, taking on Lehman College, Albertus Magnus, and Brooklyn College. They will also play John Jay, who finished 12-4 last season in the CUNYAC conference.

The team will have five conference games on their schedule. They will take on conference tournament co-runner up Sarah Lawrence, Vaughn College, and the Webb Institute all at home. These home games will be taking place at the USTA National Tennis Center, which is home to the U.S. Open. They will also face both the conference tournament co-runner up Culinary Institute at home and defending champion Pratt Institute on the road in back-to-back days on April 27th and 28th.

Among the players returning, the Bears bring back senior Nick Orlando (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) as well as Dickson Tan (Brooklyn, N.Y./East-West School of International Studies) who advanced to the semifinals in last year's tournament. Also back on the roster are Javier Bosque (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaSalle Academy), Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Academy), and Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Academy).

St. Joseph's looks to improve in 2014 and make some noise in the HVIAC Tournament, which takes place at the USTA National Tennis Center on May 3rd.
