Men's Tennis Picks Up First Win Of Season, Cruising to 8-1 Victory Over Vaughn

FLUSHING, N.Y.—The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis team broke into the win column with a dominating 8-1 victory over Vaughn College in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Bears (1-4, 1-1 HVIAC) got off to a strong start with Kevin Caicedo (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Matthew Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) securing a comfortable 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

The other two tandems however were put to the test, but both prevailed. Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) and Nolan Parr (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) claimed a 9-7 triumph at No. 2 doubles over Alamine Alami-Binani and Tobi Oladeji and Carlos Mayorga (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) and James Hanophy (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) outlasted Joel Haynes and Ahmed Aly at No. 3 doubles in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (9-7) to give the Bears a 3-0 lead heading into singles.

In singles play, Aly gave the Warriors (0-4, 0-3 HVIAC) their first point of the match winning 10-1 at No. 4 singles, but the Bears would rattle off the final five matches for the win.

Parr cruised to a 10-1 triumph at No. 2 singles in his first time playing at the flight this season and his doubles partner Johnson claimed a win over Oladeji at No. 3 singles by an equal margin to clinch the victory.

At the top singles match, Caicedo bested Alami-Binani, 10-6, and Dickson Tan (Brooklyn, N.Y./East-West School of International Studies) downed Matthaus Duncan-Lovell, 10-7, at No. 6 singles and Smith closed out the match with a 10-7 win over Haynes at No. 4 singles.

For Caicedo, Johnson, Smith and Tan, it was their first singles wins of the season and the first career victory for the freshman Smith.

The Bears are back on the courts on Thursday, April 16 at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy starting at 4 p.m.
