Smalley Earns Skyline Rookie of the Week Honors; Mayorga Lands on Honor Roll

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Picking up his first two collegiate wins and contributing to the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) victory over John Jay, sophomore Alec Smalley (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) has been named the Skyline Conference Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week and senior Carlos Mayorga (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) received honor roll recognition, the league office announced earlier today.

Smalley and Mayorga were both victorious in singles and doubles, as both contributed two points toward the tightly-contested 5-4 victory over John Jay College last Thursday, St. Joseph's first win of the season and the first over the Bloodhounds in program history.

In the win over John Jay, Smalley secured an 8-6 victory with Kyle Johnson (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook Central) at No. 2 doubles, Smalley cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kevin LaTorre at No. 6 singles to help the Bears maintain a lead in the match.

Mayorga dropped his opening set at No. 5 singles, but rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 8-6, and with the overall match in the balance, the senior completed the comeback with a 12-10 victory in the third-set super-tiebreaker.

Riding their first win of the season and sitting at 1-1 overall, the Bears will head face another CUNYAC foe in City College of New York tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Purchase College.
