Men’s Tennis Downs Albertus Magnus For First Win of Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Four different Bears went undefeated in singles and doubles to lift the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's tennis team to a 6-3 triumph over Albertus Magnus College on Saturday morning.

Freshman Daniel Vaitzman (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) led the Bears atop the lineup and collected his first two collegiate wins pairing up with Israel Bautista (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills) for an 8-6 win at No. 1 singles before winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 at the top singles match. Bautista outlasted his opponent at No. 5 singles taking the first set in a tiebreak and sweeping the second set, 7-6 (4), 6-0.

Junior Denise Trerotola (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) delivered the match-clinching point prevailing at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-4. She teamed up with Valentina Velez Valencia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) to post an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. Velez Valencia collected her first singles win in men's tennis with an 8-2 triumph in the final match of the day.

Freshman Santiago Marin (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day) played a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles but was edged out, 6-4, 6-4.

The Bears (1-3) open a four-match home stand at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center hosting Lehman College in a non-conference match on Monday, April 2 starting at 7 p.m.
