Torres Named HVMAC Player of the Week; Bears Lose to Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, NY – For the first time in his career, sophomore Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) has been named the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. The announcement was made on Tuesday before the Bears took on Mount Saint Vincent.

Over three matches, Torres totaled 19 kills, ten digs and six blocks. In the Bears' match against Webb on March 27th, Torres led St. Joseph's with season highs in kills, nine, and digs, seven. He also collected three blocks in the four set match.

Later Tuesday night, Torres and the Bears traveled to Riverdale, NY to take on the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent. The newly crowned player of the week couldn't help the Bears avenge an early season loss to the Dolphins, as the Bears lost in straight sets 25-5, 25-12, 25-6.

Torres and Michael Kumar (Staten Island, NY/Poly Prep) each had two kills apiece and Derrick Akwei (Ghana/Port Angeles HS) and Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) shared the lead with four digs.

David Guerrero led the way for the Dolphins with 13 kills and six digs. Michael Sin had a game-high 11 digs and Michael Quinn handed out 20 assists.

St. Joseph's is back on the court on Sunday, April 3rd at Sarah Lawrence. The afternoon game kicks off at 4:00 pm.
