City Tech Too Much for St. Joseph’s

BROOKLYN, NY – St. Joseph's came out firing in the first set of their volleyball match against City Tech, but the victory slipped through their fingers as City Tech took that set and the following two to sweep the match 3-0. The Bears ended the match with 15 kills, their second most in a match this season.

The spirited first set saw the Bears comeback from a 16-9 deficit to tie the game at 18-18. St. Joseph's held their first lead of the game at 19-18, completing a 9-2 run. That lead quickly turned back over to City Tech and the Yellow Jackets went on to win 25-21.

The Bears didn't have much fight left after the first set, and the Yellow Jackets had an easier time taking the final two sets 25-9, 25-14.

St. Joseph's had a balanced effort collecting 15 kills and registering 17 digs. Mahmoud Elsayed (Egypt/Assediq International) led the way with four kills, five digs and two block assists. Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) also had four kills and Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) tied Elsayed with five digs and also served up five aces.

Phillip Vern had a game-high 10 kills for City Tech while four Yellow Jackets had at least five digs. Grzegorz Rozum dished out a game-high 18 assists.

The Bears travel to Glen Cove, New York for their next match against Webb on Sunday, March 27th. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
