Bears Volleyball Drops Both Ends of Home Opener Tri-Match

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team dropped both ends of a tri-match falling in straight sets to Albertus Magnus College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-8) and succumbing to Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-11) on Saturday afternoon at Brooklyn Technical High School.

Albertus Magnus defeated Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-8) in the second match of the afternoon and improved to 2-0 on the season.  Brooklyn College picked up their first win of the season, moving to 1-5 and St. Joseph's fell to 1-2 on the young season.

In the opener, Albertus Magnus saw 12 kills from Brendan Charamut as the Falcons amassed 29 kills and collectively hit .400 for the match.  The Falcons also utilized a tough jump serve to record 21 service aces.  Carlos Torres handed out a match-high 25 assists.

St. Joseph's found trouble finding their groove offensively, combining for eight kills but committed 15 hitting errors and five service errors.  Senior Raymond Morales (Brooklyn, NY Lasalle Academy) three kills led the offense and shared team-high honors on defense with sophomore Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Gardens) bringing up four digs each.  Husain also dished out six assists.

In the nightcap, St. Joseph's managed to get the offense going taking an early 6-3 lead in the opening frame, but fell short to their cross-borough rivals.  Junior Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) led the attack with seven kills and had a team-high-tying six digs to help anchor the defense with Morales.  Defensively, the Bears also had 3.5 blocks led by senior Maciej Sadowski (Brooklyn, NY/Cathedral Prep) who had a solo and assisted block.

Brooklyn College was led by Alexander Shlivko who had 10 kills, committing only one error, and also served up four aces, both match highs.  Gene Tom controlled the offense handing out 21 assists and libero Timothy Hui led the defense with a match-high nine digs.

St. Joseph's will begin a three-game stretch of road games returning to the court on Thursday, February 16th facing York College.  Game time is schedule for 8 p.m.
