Bears Volleyball Grounded by Cardinals

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team dropped a straight-set non-conference decision to York College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19), on Thursday night on the road.

Junior Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) led the St. Joseph's (1-3, 0-0 HVMAC) attack with six kills.  Freshman Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial) and senior Maciej Sadowski (Brooklyn, NY/Cathedral Prep) added three kills each, Sadowski also bringing up seven digs to lead the defense.  Senior Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) served up five aces.

York (7-8, 3-0 CUNYAC) was led by Edner Geffard who put away a match-high 10 kills without an attack error for a .667 attack percentage.  Glenn Vargas directed the offense with 32 assists while Kevin Mora anchored the defense with 10 digs.

The Bears went step-for-step with the Cardinals in the opening frame and with the tied at 13-13, York began to pull away as the Bears committed several errors and struggled to sideout, while the Cardinals combined for 15 kills in the set.

St. Joseph's took early leads in the second and third frames, but couldn't keep pace with the Cardinals who over the final two sets rode a balanced attack with three different players registering four or more kills and combined to hit .196 as team.

St. Joseph's has a week off before returning to action on Friday, February 24 on the road against Brooklyn College looking to reverse the decision from their meeting this past weekend. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
