Bears Volleyball Drops Straight Set Decision to Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY – Meeting for the second time this season, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team couldn't avenge a loss in their home opener, falling to Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-12) on Friday night at the West Quad Center.

St. Joseph's (1-4) was led by freshman Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Varela) who had three kills, and a pair of digs.  Junior Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) led the defense with six digs, adding a kill and senior Maciej Sadowski (Brooklyn, NY/Cathedral Prep) had five digs with a kill.

Brooklyn College (3-8) had a balanced attack that produced 32 kills.  Duong Thai had eight kills and four aces, both match highs, and added 12 digs.  Gene Tom handed out 23 assists and Timothy Hui had a match-high 13 digs.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead to open the match before Brooklyn rolled off 13 straight points and took a convincing 25-7 opening set victory.  St. Joseph's rebounded in the second set remaining within reach throughout the second set before ultimately falling 25-20.  The Bears combined for three kills in the final set, with Urshela accounting for two, but the Bulldogs pulled away with a 7-0 run midway through the set to close out the match, 25-12.

St. Joseph's plays the second of three matches in four days and will look to snap a four-game skid, opening their Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference schedule on the road against Cooper Union tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
